Choosing which jewelry pieces to incorporate into your wedding day bridal look is all about balance—what will accentuate the ensemble without feeling overly distracting or bold? One answer to that question would be a pair of lab-grown diamond stud earrings. Sleek, timeless, and enduringly elegant, the stylish simplicity of a dazzling pair of studs can’t be overstated and choosing a lab-grown diamond, specifically, can be a thoughtful choice for any bride-to-be.

“Lab-grown diamonds are grown in a lab where crystals form in controlled conditions of high heat and pressure over some time,” explains Stella Ma, Chief Product Officer at Italic. “These diamonds have a low impact on the environment and each one can be traced back to where it was grown from. And because these are grown in a controlled environment and with the advancements in technology, they are available to customers at a lower price-point.”

Stella Ma is the Chief Product Officer at Italic, a digital marketplace with items across fashion, home, and more that works directly with leading global manufacturers.

The positive environmental implications compounded with a lower price tag can be the deciding factors for wearing a pair of lab-grown diamond stud earrings on the big day.

Ma says that for stud earrings she recommends solitaire and circular-cut diamonds. “They allow the most light to shine through from all angles,” she notes. As for settings, she points toward prong. “This is due to the fact that it allows for the light to shine through, while also giving a higher degree of security with the prongs holding the diamond in place,” she says. "They should also be certified, giving you important information on cut, clarity, weight, and other pertinent details."

As Ma touched on earlier, lab-grown diamonds are created in a laboratory under conditions of high heat and pressure. “On the other hand, traditionally mined diamonds face a much longer journey and are harvested from the earth, not grown,” Ma explains. “They formed many years ago and will likely be the oldest thing you ever touch. And most traditional diamonds are not gem quality as gem-quality is rare, thus making the cost much higher and more of an investment piece as their value can increase over time because there are a finite amount of traditional diamonds.”

No, lab-grown diamonds are not more expensive than natural diamonds. In most cases, you can count on mined diamonds to cost more than their lab-grown counterparts—but that doesn’t mean they will be cheap. “There are fewer variable costs when creating a lab-grown diamond, which means the price can remain stable for a longer period. Many factors go into mining natural diamonds that are hard to control, including a limited supply, which can be seen in the volatility of their price for the end consumer,” Ma says. Generally speaking, lab-grown diamond jewelry is 30 percent less expensive to create than its natural, mined counterparts, she adds. “But mined diamonds are arguably much more of an investment piece, as their value can rise greatly over many years.”

Unless you envision your wedding day look to go in a distinctly bold direction you’ll want to choose a pair of earrings that enhance your appearance without dominating it. Naturally, a pair of sparkly studs falls into this category perfectly. Other options include small, dainty hoops or something vintage-inspired like pearl earrings.
