WORCESTER — Officials are unsure what caused a large, overhead sign to topple onto Interstate 190 south during the early-morning commute Tuesday.
There were no reports of injuries or vehicles damaged.
Kristen Pennucci, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation, said engineers are investigating the cause and performing a structural review of all overhead sign supports along the I-190 corridor.
The sign, near the Ararat Street overpass, pointed to the Gold Star Boulevard and West Boylston Street interchange by Indian Lake. It stood on a tree-dense part of the corridor on the north side of the city.
Highway officials received a report of a fallen sign just before Exit 1 at around 7 a.m. Tuesday. The large pole holding the sign tilted until the bottom of the sign slammed into the roadway.
Traffic was detoured while crews removed the sign. Pennucci said the lanes reopened by 9 a.m.
