Rensselaer County shared this photo from the scene of a substation explosion in East Greenbush July 17, 2022.

EAST GREENBUSH — Power was restored overnight to nearly every National Grid customer who lost service after an explosion Sunday at a substation off Forrest Point Drive.

As of 5 a.m., only a handful of customers remained in the dark and it was unclear if those outages were tied to the explosion.

The outages on Sunday peaked at 11,000 outages in Rensselaer County.

It is unclear what caused the explosion, which sent a plume of black smoke into the air.

East Greenbush police on Sunday alerted residents that National Grid crews and fire departments were on the scene, and that there were no injuries as a result of the explosion.
