Here’s everything you need to know about nose piercings

We're Bringing Back Nose Piercings!

In case you missed out, nose piercings are having a moment this season! Nose rings have been integral to various cultures and civilizations for decades. From being popular bridal jewellery in India to punk subcultures to an everyday style statement around the globe – the nose ring has endured and evolved with time. Kim Kardashian and North West's matching nose rings at the Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Fall 2022 show, and Willow Smith's iconic septum jewellery have revived the nose piercing trend once again. If you're looking to do something frivolous for a change or simply want an upgraded edgy look, get creative with a new nose piercing! From traditional nose rings and dainty studs to standout septum jewellery, it is also the perfect way to express your individuality and personal style. Without any further ado, here's everything you need to know about getting a nose-piercing:

While the traditional nostril stud is the most popular type of jewellery, there are several variations of the nose-piercing that you can consider.

The nostril piercing is by far the most common type of facial piercing. This is because it is versatile and elegant and suits most nose structures. Compared to the other nose piercings, the nostril piercing is a simple process and is also easy to care for. From delicate studs to nose rings, a wide variety of jewellery can be worn with a traditional nostril piercing. It heals completely within a short period of two to three months.

The septum piercing is another popular type of piercing amongst celebrities like Rihanna, Zoe Kravitz, Willow Smith, and Bella Thorne. Since it pierces through cartilage, it may be more painful than a nostril piercing. Although known for its edgy style, the septum piercing fits well with almost any aesthetic and can be worn with flattering jewellery such as a horseshoe or circular hoop. The septum piercing can recover in three to four months with good after-care hygiene.

The septril piercing is a combination of the rhino and septum piercing. It goes through the septum to either the rose's bottom or top. Though the septril piercing is rare and requires immense after-care, it will give a unique look with a small stud, a curved barbell, or a plug.

Nothing says edgy like a brand-new bridge piercing (aka the Erl)! It sits horizontally across the nose bridge and directly between the eyes. This surface piercing makes an eye-catching statement with a straight barbell or a small curved barbell. It adds just the perfect amount of edgy to your aesthetic.

Similar to the nose bridge piercing, the nasallang looks like two different piercings at first glance. For the Nasallang piercing, also known as the tri-nasal piercing, a single bar goes through the right nostril, the septum, and the left nostril. It's an uncommon and unique facial piercing that may require a fairly high pain threshold. The Nasallang piercing can take about four to six months to heal.

The Austin Bar piercing is another rare facial piercing where the jewellery goes through the tip of the nose. Although it may look similar to the Nasallang piercing, the Austin avoids both the septum and the nasal cavities. The Austin Bar piercing may take about two or three months to heal completely.

The rhino piercing, also known as the vertical tip piercing, is one of a kind and incredibly advanced. While the piercing may cause pain and discomfort as it sits vertically between the two nostrils, it gives a new unique look. The rhino piercing requires approximately six to nine months to heal completely.

The amount of pain you experience after getting a new nose piercing can depend on several factors such as the type of piercing, your pain threshold, the type of jewellery you wear (18 or 24 karat gold, titanium, stainless steel, etc.), and the quality of after-care you put into it. Most times, a simple nose piercing may only cause minimal pain and discomfort. However, more complex nostril piercings such as the nasallang or the septum piercing that goes through the cartilage may have slightly higher pain levels. At the time of the piercing, you may only feel a slight pinch, and your eyes may well up with tears. The piercing may cause soreness, swelling, tenderness, and some minor bruising during the initial period. The piercing begins to heal completely after the initial inflammatory stage when the swelling settles, and the scar tissue is formed.

Nose-piercings are all the rage these days! They are almost as common as ear piercings. Pierced nostrils can take about four to six months to recover fully. However, it may take longer (sometimes even up to nine months) if the tissue does not heal due to an infection or any other risk associated with getting your nose pierced. Poor sterilization equipment during the procedure and unhygienic after-care can lead to infections. This may cause excessive pain, oozing pus, and nose bumps, leaving scars. If an infection goes untreated and worsens, it may manifest through a fever and also cause nasal trauma. It's common for a new nose piercing to bleed and cause discomfort. However, professional help is necessary if it continues to bleed after several weeks or causes a haematoma (a swollen bruise). Several other issues may surface after getting a nose-piercing. For example, it can lead to a metal-related allergic reaction and cause numbness in case of nerve damage. Improper healing may cause discolouration, bad odour, blisters, and excessively dry skin around the piercing. If the piercing is done incorrectly, the jewellery may shift or loosen. In this case, the jewellery can sink into the piercing, and you may inhale or swallow small studs or pieces of metal. Therefore, you must always ensure that your piercing is done by an experienced professional with hygienic and thoroughly sterilized instruments.

The quality of after-care you put in defines the outcome of your piercing. A nose piercing requires much more attention and gentle care than ear piercings. Before touching the freshly pierced area, you must wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. To keep the piercing clean, dip your nose into a saline solution or gently dab the area with disposable paper towels or cotton balls at least twice a day. You can make your saline mixture with sea salt and distilled water. Make sure to clean both inside and outside the piercing with saline solution and the piece jewellery with soapy water on a routine basis to avoid any bacterial infection. You may also need to alter your diet while the nose piercing heals. For example, extremely hot beverages, and spicy and salty food can trigger inflammation, irritate the mucous membrane or cause a bacterial infection. Until the piercing has healed completely, you must avoid swimming pools, saunas, and other infection-prone locations. Good after-care lies at the core of the nose piercing's recovery process. And once you are done with it all, you get to rock a sick piercing! How about that, right?

A: You should ideally opt for stainless steel jewellery right after a piercing since it is hypoallergenic and doesn't irritate the skin, unlike other metals. Nose studs are usually preferred over corkscrew nose rings since they are easier to handle. However, it is extremely important to insert it correctly to avoid skin infections.

A: While most people assume that nose piercings are extremely, they actually aren't. It is normal to face slight discomfort and irritation initially, it ebbs away in a few days.

A: The longevity lasts depends on the usage. If you don't wear a nose ring or a nose pin regularly, the piercing will close up over the course of time.

A: It is important to know if you are allergic to metals before getting a piercing as allergies triggered by the metal in the piercings can be damaging to life. Do your research carefully before proceeding with it.

A: There are no such restrictions on eating after a nose piercing but it is advisable to avoid too hot and spicy food right after getting a piercing as it can cause irritation or disturbance around the pierced area.
