A resident heard the crash at about 1:20 a.m. and rushed outside to find the vehicle dipping over the edge and held by the damaged rail, according to OnScene.TV. The driver, though, fled the scene and was not found.
Authorities said the driver of the Nissan Altima had failed to slow while making a left turn from westbound Madison Avenue onto southbound Caminito Fuente.
At that point, the car went off the roadway and struck a large tree before hitting the guardrail, which prevented a drop of up to 150 feet toward Mission Valley.
San Diego police will investigate. They found an open container of beer by the car’s door.
