A power outage in Livonia has caused closures at several city facilities, including Livonia City Hall and the Bennett Civic Center Library.

The city shared on social media Wednesday afternoon that a fire at a DTE substation in Livonia has been identified as the cause of the outage. According to DTE's power outage map, the fire started around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the energy company is unable to say when power will be restored.

DTE officials haven't yet determined what caused the fire. The substation is near Middlebelt and Interstate 96, but DTE doesn't share exact locations of its substations for security reasons.

At least 3,400 customers are impacted by the outage, which limited to the areas between Seven Mile and Plymouth Roads as well as Merriman and Beech Daly roads.

The affected city facilities include city hall, the Civic Center Library, the city's senior center, Sandburg Library, Kirksey Recreation Center and the 16th District Court. Kirksey's pools and the aforementioned city buildings are closed until power is restored.

Residents can access city hall to pay tax and water bills in the treasurer's office.

The outage also impacted Buchannan Elementary and Riley Upper Elementary. Both buildings will complete the school day as normal.

DTE Energy has been criticized recently for its slow power restoration after storms. During the most recent weather event in late August, 380,000 lost power. DTE is requesting to up its rates by 8.8%, which would mean most customers would spend $10 more a month.
