The CT United Ride will travel through nine area towns, including Westport, on Sunday to pay tribute to the victims and first responders of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks . The event is Connecticut’s largest annual 9/11 tribute as well as the largest motorcycle ride in the state.

The motorcade will use the route established last year, which starts at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport around 11:30 a.m. It continues through Westport into Wilton, Redding, Bethel, Newtown, Monroe, Trumbull, and Fairfield, ending at Seaside Park in Bridgeport.

The procession travels from Sherwood Island State Park onto the Sherwood Island Connector where the riders will then take Interstate 95 southbound from Exit 18 to Exit 17. The procession will then travel north up Saugatuck Avenue (Route 136) from Exit 17, continue north on to Riverside Avenue (Route 33) to Wilton Road, and across the Wilton town line. The route is closed and continuous, meaning that with the assistance of a police escort, the participating motorcyclists drive through traffic lights and do not stop at stop signs.

“Motorists should anticipate extended traffic delays along the procession’s route which could potentially last 45 minutes or longer. Although delays are to be expected please be mindful of those we lost over 20 years ago, as well as their families who are with us today, as it certainly is a day for remembrance and reflection,” Westport Police said in a release.

Drivers are recommended to take alternate routes when possible since these areas will be completely impassable until the entire procession clears.

Westport is getting some sign upgrades, state Sen. Will Haskell recently announced.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is developing plans for the systematic replacement and, or installation of the One Way, Do Not Enter, Wrong Way, and Keep Right signs that are along divided highways.

The plans are expected to be completed by the end of the year with the installation to follow shortly.

“This summer, a Westport mother of three lost her life in a tragic accident involving a wrong-way driver,” Sen. Haskell said. “This terrible loss was part of a growing trend of wrong-way driving, and I believe it's critical to improve the signage that makes these accidents less likely. I'm hopeful that sign improvements in Bethel and Westport will keep drivers better informed and perhaps save lives in the future.”

Westport’s signs are planned for the intersection of Post Road East at Mile point 10.56 N/S Turnaround and 727 Post Road, and the intersection of Post Road East at Long Lots Road and Mile point 20.70 N/S Turnaround.

Westport First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker recently honored the Connecticut State Champion 11 and under All Star baseball team at the Westport Town Hall on Sept. 7.
