ASHLAND — The county’s guardrail installation project will be underway soon following a bid opening Thursday.

The Board of Ashland County Commissioners opened two bids for the project that came in under budget.

Commissioners opened a bid a month ago that came in too high, forcing officials back to the drawing board. The original estimate to replace and install guardrail at 37 locations across Ashland County was $291,666.

The cost in supplies, labor and transportation contributed to an original bid of a little more than $335,000.

This time around, Ashland County Engineer Ed Meixner increased the project’s budget to $331,730.

The bids Thursday came in at $299,175 and $312,989 from two different construction firms.

Meixner said he would come back next week with a recommendation after reviewing the bid speculations.

The engineer said most of the project will be funded with a $300,000 grant administered through the Ohio Department of Transportation. The rest of the cost, if any, would be covered by county coffers.
