One person was seriously injured in a crash Tuesday morning on the Everett Turnpike in Merrimack.

The crash happened near Exit 12 just before 9 a.m. A portion of the highway was closed for hours after the crash.

Police said a 32-year-old Manchester man suffered life-threatening injuries when his car was impaled by a guardrail, leaving him trapped.

Crews used hydraulic rescue tools to cut open the car's roof to get him out. He was taken to Elliot Hospital for treatment, police said.

Investigators said the crash caused large pieces of the guardrail to be forced into the northbound side of the highway, leading to a separate multi-vehicle crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, though police said speed appears to have been a factor.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, saw the driver's actions before the crash or drove by the scene with a dashboard camera is asked to contact Trooper Ryan Hajjar at Ryan.J.Hajjar@dos.nh.gov or at 603-223-8760.
