Xcel Energy crews were working to restore power in portions of downtown Amarillo after an outage Friday morning.
"A portion of customers affected by the earlier power outage lost power again at 12:47 p.m. due to a failed connection to their temporary substation source," according to Wes Reeves with Xcel Energy in an email update. "We had to bring that circuit offline to make a repair and restored those customers at 1:30 p.m. We’re sorry for the inconvenience this has caused our customers in the central and east-central areas of the city."
"We were able to complete our switching shortly after 12 p.m., restoring all customers in the downtown area," Reeves said in an earlier email update. "Essentially we rerouted the power flow around the substation and now the affected customers are being served out of neighboring substations. There were a few false starts as the system was re-balancing. We are continuing to work at the Pierce Street Substation to identify the source of the fault and make any necessary repairs before transferring customers back."
As of about 12:30 p.m., around 3,000 customers were impacted by the outage, according to Xcel Energy's power outage map.
"We’re currently looking at the Pierce Street Substation where all three circuits are out," Reeves said in an earlier update.
Amarillo College’s Washington Street campus is also served from the Pierce Street facility.
