SISKIYOU COUNTY, Cal. -- California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) says work is underway to resume the Siskiyou Interstate 5 Clear Recover Zone (CRZ) project today.

Caltrans describes a clear recovery zone as an unobstructed area beyond the edge of the road which gives drivers an opportunity to regain control should they lose control of their vehicles.

Caltrans says its Siskiyou 5 CRZ project in Siskiyou County involves various locations from 0.2 miles north of the Ream Avenue Overcrossing to 0.2 miles south of the Hilt Road Overcrossing on Interstate 5.

Caltrans says, "This project will bring numerous identified locations up to current Highway Design Manual standards for CRZ by installing metal beam guardrail, removing foliage/trees, and implementing additional standard CRZ requirements." Caltrans estimates the project will take 60 working days from April to October 2022.

Caltrans says it expects no impact to traffic this week while crews install construction area signs before roadwork starts at the southernmost end of the project near Ream Avenue, then moves north.  It says that during following weeks crews will stage equipment, clear obstacles and perform roadway excavation adding, "Daily shoulder and/or lane closures are expected during the duration of the project. Speed limits will be reduced by 10mph when lane closures are in place. Crews will work Monday through Friday with no weekend work anticipated."

It reminds drivers that while schedules are subject to change without notice, highway project updates are shared on Caltrans District 2's Facebook and Twitter sites.  Updated highway conditions for California can be found on the QuickMap app or by visiting quickmap.dot.ca.gov and on One-Stop-Shop at oss.weathershare.org for the Western United States.
