PETALUMA, CA — A Petaluma Transit bus was involved in a collision Thursday morning that resulted in the loss of power to a Petaluma intersection and residents of the surrounding neighborhood, police said.

The bus driver and the only passenger on board suffered minor injuries in the collision reported at 7:23 a.m. on Maria Drive at East Washington Street, the Petaluma Police Department said in a news release.

"The bus was traveling southbound on Marie Drive, just prior to East Washington, when it appears to have left the roadway and struck a fence on the south side of Maria Drive," Petaluma police Lt. Tim Lyons said. "The bus continued southbound through the intersection striking a traffic control box, fence, and power pole."

The bus came to rest on Maria Drive near Creekside Circle.

Police shut down Creekside Drive and eastbound East Washington was reduced to one lane as the crash was investigated.

The incident damaged the traffic control system which controls the signal light for the intersection.

"Work is currently being done to repair the traffic control signals," Lyons said. "The traffic lights are out at the intersection, and it is expected to take several days for repair."

In the meantime, temporary stop signs and flashing lights have been put in place to remind drivers to stop at the intersection. Police asked those traveling through the area to slow down and drive with caution until the repairs are completed.

"As a reminder, per the California Vehicle Code, 'The driver of any vehicle approaching an intersection which has official traffic control signals that are inoperative shall stop at the intersection and may proceed with caution when it is safe to do so,'" Lyons said.

The power pole that was struck in the area knocked out power to the neighborhood.

PG&E was able to restore power quickly to most of its customers and was actively working to restore power to all customers, police said.

According to the PG&E website, as of 8:57 p.m. Thursday there were still 118 customers without power near the intersection. PG&E estimated power would be fully restored by 12 a.m. Friday.

Police were continuing their investigation and asked anyone who witnessed the crash to call the Petaluma Police Department's Traffic Unit at 707-778-4372.
