L.A. County Drops Anti-Taco Stand K-Rails to Deter Taqueros From Setting Up - L.A. TACO

L.A. TACO has confirmed with an anonymous source that the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, led by Hilda Solis, has dropped over two dozen concrete K-rail barriers on the southeast corner of Atlantic and Pomona Boulevards in an attempt to deter the “Tacos La Güera” stand from setting up.

Each K-rail concrete barrier weighs over three tons and is estimated to cost around $500 to $1,000 of taxpayer money to drop. They were placed, as early as July, approximately where the popular streetside taco stand has been set up for the last five years on the public side of the sidewalk facing the parking lot for shuttered Pep Boys auto shop.

The anonymous source who came forward shared that the K-rails were a direct result of a complaint filed against the taqueros by Rudy’s L.A., a bar that is popular with off-duty Sheriff’s Department deputies. The bar, located half a block away, dons a “Vote for Villanueva” banner.

Undeterred by roughly $15,000 worth of concrete barriers, La Güera Taquería simply moved their operation a few feet away and continued to sell closer to the entrance of the Pep Boys.

Tensions between brick-and-mortar restaurants and street vendors are notorious all around Los Angeles county, sometimes leading to direct confrontations that can turn violent between the two parties. However, most of the time, the conflict occurs indirectly through multiple complaints filed to the L.A. County of Public Health by respective brick-and-mortar businesses against street vendors setting up near their operations.

This is the first occurrence of anti-taco infrastructure being deployed by the County that L.A. TACO has documented. It resembles anti-homeless planters and other similar architecture that the county has utilized over the years.

This anti-taquería scoop comes to L.A. TACO on the morning of SB 972 passing the Assembly in Sacramento, a bill that would finally update the California food code to be more inclusive of street vending practices and allow vendors to be f ully permitted, including taco stands.

It also marks the latest development in an uptick of anti-street vending practices towards a marginalized community that has recently targeted multiple penalties, racist verbal assaults, and even death.

This part of East Los Angeles is unincorporated and supervised by Hilda Solis. In December of last year, Solis received public scrutiny for painting a curb popular with food trucks red without much notice in the City of Commerce Under public pressure, she backtracked and eventually power-washed the red paint from the curbs.

L.A. TACO reached out to the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors for comment and has not heard back. Like this article? I did not vote for her. She is a two face to our community. We need someone in office that is for the people.

Good luck getting her out.

I believe in political science. I also believe in social control. I also believe that there are some kind of infiltrators and provacutures creating Kaos for political purposes. I also believe some of the vendors in the street are targeted by some kind of agents to create division and pushed thru the mainstream news. It’s been this way thru out history. It’s nothing new. We must not believe a so called racist narrative on the news. Because most of the time the news does not give the whole story as the should. (Need to be real journalists before publishing a one side story. We must not fall for the racist trap that history has pushed and continues to this day. No matter what country we come from, we all want to live happily ever after.

We the people control our community Vote for someone that is going to respond to the people and not to their cronies like Silvia Solis and sheriff Villanueva.

Fantastic move by Supervisor Solis. This should be the beginning of a movement to protect public health, safety for all and the integrity of businesses like Rudy’s. Places like Rudy’s take pride on having a health department approved establishment with ADA approvd clean restrooms and hand washing stations for all employees with a clean eating environment for his customers. They have proper temperature controls for warming and refrigeration for cooling. Most trucks do as well and are periodically checked and graded by the health department but those tented sidewalk set ups that often accompany the trucks are questionable. In both cases, most leave a mess behind which attracts potential rodent activity to areas that would not have such a problem otherwise. Food Trucks are great for temporary events in parks, fairs and the like. Those functions are regulated by local health departments who issue temporary permits and organizers who have restrooms and proper cleaning facilities. To allow anybody to set up shop anywhere without regard to established businesses and health & safety requirements is unfair, unlawful and not racist at all like some may say. It is a direct violation of laws and regulations established and should be followed regardless. Kudos to the Supervisor and her efforts to keep LA County clean and healthy. Hopefully this is an example to other supervisors and city councilpersons of all areas to follow, again for the health and safety of everybody. I also agree that a journalist should check his or her facts as important articles are written. Have the guts to publish both sides of a story as important as this rather than giving the usual unfounded, uneducated opinions in the form of an article.
