Thank you for your many concerns regarding the leaning wayfinding sign on Texas 135. It took a while for the sign company to place new footings to perform the repair, but it has finally been completed.
The rough and steep dip at the railroad crossing along Main Street has been repaired by Union Pacific by paving over the rail spur. It is unclear if this is a temporary measure or if it is a permanent abandonment of the spur.

After two years, we’ve finally been able to host a new class for the Clergy and Police Alliance (CAPA). We have 16 new Clergy who are attending this eight-week course, which is held each Tuesday for eight weeks.
Cpl. Pedro Adame was promoted to the rank of sergeant. Pedro began his career with KPD as a jailer in 2017.
A group of officers attended ALERRT Training (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training). We hope to never use these skills, but are proud that now our entire department, of 37 officers, is trained and has the equipment to address an active shooter response if the need arises.
We continue to make weekly arrests for possession of methamphetamine. We are even seeing addicts with multiple grams, which we’ve never seen before. During our field testing, we’ve found some of the meth also shows the presence of fentanyl, which can be deadly. We attribute these findings to the border crisis, which has allowed huge amounts of drugs into our country. The price is a third of what it was two years ago due to the ease of smuggling meth across the border.
The Fire Department has a busy week. Leverett’s Chapel students will be touring Station 1, the Fire Department will be escorting the Kilgore Homecoming Parade, and of course, SAFFE day.
The Fire Department conducted hands-on rescue rope operations training for the entire Fire Department. This was held three consecutive days. Next up will be rescue tech training later in the year.
An application has been completed for the ETCOG Waste Grant for the Tire Takeback Program.
Commercial building permit has been issued for the location of Paradise Patios on Texas 31.
State demolition notifications and process has begun at 306 E. Main St., the old Maness Furniture.
We will host the Regional Plumbing Inspectors’ Continuing Education Class on Sept. 23.
At the City Council meeting on Sept. 13, three ordinance amendments to the Kilgore Development Code were approved: Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU0 regulations; Single Family Residential (R3) minimum structure size of 800 square feet; a nonconforming residential structure can be expanded by 30 percent of the total square footage of the home one time.
The Planning and Zoning Board will meet on Sept. 21 at 8:30 a.m. to discuss two items: Site plan amendment request at 3511 Birdsong Lane and a zone change request in the 1800 block of U.S. 259.
Ryan Polk, tourism manager with Visit Kilgore, attended the annual Texas Association of Convention & Visitor Bureaus (TACVB) Conference. He was elected to serve on the TACVB Board of Directors.
